Uxmal

Eeuwenoude Maya-ruïnes, met onder meer de machtige Piramide van de Tovenaar

The Maya city of Uxmal is on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. It is covered in rainforest and has the interesting legend of the Pyramid of the Magician

This Maya city not as famous as many others, but it's definitely worth a visit. It has many interesting buildings and a strange pyramid.

The name Uxmal means built three times, though it’s not entirely clear what is meant by that. The city was founded around the year 500.

Pyramid of the Magician

The Pyramid of the Magician in Uxmal.

Upon entering you immediately run into the oval Pyramid of the Wizard. Legend has it that the temple was built in one night by a dwarf wizard.

The building is oval which is different from most other buildings of the Maya. You can climb the steep pyramid. Pay attention, because it is steep and no less than 35 meters high.

Ball Court

The famous Ball Court of Uxmal.

If you walk around here you will automatically come across the Ball Court. The Maya played a special ball game at Uxmall. The ball had to be thrown through one of the rings onto the playing court. You can still see the ring.

Visiting Uxmal

Uxmal is located in the Yucatan Peninsula. It is easily accessible from the city of Mérida. The distance is 83 kilometers, which is about an hour's drive.
